“I’m still not a hundred percent why we’re risking this.” I eye the nearly obese security guard struggling to fit behind the round desk that’s marked “Security”.
Raven is busy typing on her laptop, sitting cross legged on the cold tile floor. “Shh!”
She’s been shushing me every single time I tried to speak. Talk about someone who can’t multitask.
“Done,” one last key is swiped before the screen is closed. “Now we just wait for Simon.”
“Now, can you tell me why we’re risking doing something stupid like this when we’re already wanted fugitives?” She better not shush me again.
Raven checks the screen of her cheap disposable pre-paid phone regularly. “Several reasons. First, twenty-five thousand pounds. That cash is going to carry us through since all of my accounts have been frozen, and I’m assuming yours are, too, now. Second, the person who ordered this gig has something I want. He doesn’t know it yet, but we’re going to barter.”
Raven’s phone screen comes to life with a bubbled text message that says CLEAR.
As if on cue, the sloppy security guard finally moves position from reclining back in his massive leather chair to lean closer to one of his screens. He taps it as if that will actually do something.
“Ah, bugger,” his accent is strong, giving him away as being from a lower class neighborhood.
His chair is pushed back and the jingling of a large key ring can be heard moving along with him.
“Go, go, go!” Raven waits until the man has disappeared behind a utility door not far from his desk.
We make a mad dash across the length of the empty lobby, passed the bank of elevators and to the emergency exit stairwell, but don’t stop running. Thanks to the printed blueprint of the building that Simon was able to find online, we know exactly where to go.
The basement.
For the same reason that my office at the Bureau is underground, this company’s main frame computers are also subterranean. The amount of heat generated by the large computer banks necessary to run a global corporation like this one would overheat, unless stored in a cooled vault.
So far, Simon’s been able to do everything that he’s responsible for on his end. He tripped one of the alarms on an employee entrance to get the fat, lazy, security guard up out of his seat to check. While the security desk is vacant, Simon will be tapping into the live camera feed from all of the hidden cameras and replacing it with a looped recording so that when the guard returns, he won’t know anything is amiss while Raven and I are busy sneaking around.
Our sneakers squeak against the slick painted cement stairs as we turn around and around each turn style, heading further and further down into the bowels of the building. Finally, we reach the very last landing with nowhere else to go but through the final door to the lowest level.
This is where Simon’s assistance is put on the backburner and we’re left to our own devices.
